Saturday’s laws change – again

The laws for Saturday’s Mandela Challenge match between South Africa and Argentina at Coca-Cola Park will be played with the full experimental law variations which came into operation on 1 August.

Rugby 365 reports that the Laws will be new to everybody – players and match officials alike.

They are not the laws used in the Tri-Nations as those are the ELVs used in the Super 14 but the Springboks should be more at home with them than the Pumas or indeed the referee, Wayne Barnes. The Pumas and the referee have not played under any form of ELV at international level.

For this reason Barnes went up to George last weekend and refereed a Division 1 Currie Cup match.

The most obvious difference between ELVs in the Tri-Nations and these “global” ELVs is in the sanctions. It is likely that there could be more penalties and scrums and much fewer free kicks this weekend.

The weekend after that the Springboks will be pack to Tri-Nations ELVs.

The officials for Saturday:

Referee: Wayne Barnes (England)
Touch judges: Matt Goddard (Australia), James Leckie (Australia)
Television match official: Geoff Warren (England)
Assessor: Tappe Henning (IRB)
