WP coaching ‘exodus’ to Sarries

Western Province are struggling to keep a number of their players and coaches in Cape Town.

Afrikaans Sunday newspaper Sondag reported that Brendan Venter, the technical advisor of the Stormers, has approached Matthew Proudfoot, WP’s new forwards coach to join him at Saracens from July.

Rugby 365 reports that Venter was appointed coach of Saracens after Eddie Jones quit the post last month and will join them before the start of the next English season.

Proudfoot was approached personally by Venter, while Stormers players – including Schalk Brits and Schalk Burger – have received offers from the English club.

Stormers media liaison Frikkie Erasmus referred the matter to Western Province, but Sondag confirmed that Stormers coach Rassie Erasmus will meet with Venter on Tuesday to talk about the offer and Venter’s path forward in his remaining months at the team.

Western Province CEO Rob Wagner denied there was ever an offer.

“It is absolute rubbish, Proudfoot is going nowhere and we have received no request that he can leave us.”

Proudfoot was highly successful during his stint at Potchefstroom University.
