Guess who’s back?

That’s right, fans. Former Shark (and Cheetahs, Griquas, Cats, WP, whatever else) flyhalf-cum-fullback Gaffie du Toit is heading back for yet another crack at SA Rugby, this time with the first division SWD Eagles!

This is kind of predictable. Some previously unheard-of firm of Private Equity moguls – in this case, Bunker Captial – swoop in with plenty of filthy lucre and attempt to resurrect a B-division franchise. It’s Toulon-style rugby economics at its very worst – all great, except for the fact that it doesn’t work. Just ask Toulon -or Boland…

That notwithstanding, Gaffie du Toit will join Cheetahs reject Bevin Fortuin and a number of other hardly-known “stars”, including Kiwi hooker Junior Leota, in George this season as they attempt to get promoted to the Currie Cup premier division. Good luck to you all, I say. Hope your new friends don’t disappear with all the money…
