Muller move confirmed next week

A report on the BBC website suggests that Ulster RFC will next week confirm the signing of former Sharks captain Johann Muller on a two-year deal.

Although Muller’s Sharks contract is valid until the end of 2010, the report intimates that the necessary negotiations have taken place and that the big lock forward will be released to join Ulster after the Super 14 concludes in May. Another former Sharks stalwart, prop BJ Botha, may well extend his stay at the Belfast club, although Sharksworld still believes he will return to Durban later this year.

Ulster would appear to be out of the running for the services of scrumhalf Ruan Pienaar, citing his salary demands as the reason for no deal being reached. From a Sharks perspective, this comes as little consolation. Pienaar is indeed on the market and we need to assume that whoever manages to meet his asking price will ultimately end up securing his services.

Assuming the departure of the du Plessis brothers, the Sharks will now be scratching their heads as they look to plug the holes that are starting to appear in a once-fearsome tight five.

Update: Have a look here for a piece I wrote about Muller and Ruan Pienaar for the Ulster fansite, the Front Row Union.
