It’s that time of the year when all sorts of awards and prizes get handed to players who have performed well in the Super Rugby tournament. Here at Sharksworld, we tend to do things a little differently, rewarding those players that performed well, performed poorly as well as rewarding them for those idiotic moments.

Next in our series of SW Awards we will be looking at the performances of the hookers in the tournament. Let’s have a look at our categories:

Player of the Tournament: The nominees for best hooker of the season are as follow: 1. Bismarck du Plessis for his strong performances at the Sharks this season, with his form peaking at the right part of the season. 2. Corey Flynn for being the anchor in the Crusaders front row all season long. 3. Deon Fourie for his abrasive playing style and his magnificent running on the wings. 4. Keven Mealamu for proving that it doesn’t matter if you have been in the game for a while, he seems to keep coming back better every year. 5. Tatafu Polota-Nau for being in fantastic form at the Waratahs, and even after his injury came back strong as ever.

South African hooker of the Tournament: The nominees for South African hooker for the year are: 1. Bismarck du Plessis from the Sharks, 2. Deon Fourie from the Stormers, 3. Chiliboy Ralapelle from the Bulls and 4. Adriaan Strauss from the Cheetahs.

Most promising hooker of the tournament: There are a few young and promising hookers from the tournament: 1. Saia Faingaa from the Reds, 2. Bandise Maku from the Lions and as mentioned above, 3. Chiliboy Ralapelle from the Bulls.

The Andy Goode Worst Purchase award goes to the Stormers again, this time for their purchase of Ethienne Reynecke from Saracens. He has made one lonely appearance off the bench and is on his way to Connacht next season. But, in all seriousness, if you have Deon Fourie and Tiaan Liebenberg, why would you want to play Reynecke?

The next award is a very special one, and for this one and only time it will be called the Grant10 award, and this is for the most discussed hooker on the Sharksworld blog, and we have a few nominations: 1. John Smit, for being the worst scrumming hooker in the country. 2. John Smit, for not retiring three years ago. 3. John Smit, for not being able to throw into the line outs or catch a ball. And finally, 4. John Smit, for being the worst captain in rugby history.

Please make your selections in the comments below, and I will gather the necessary information to report back after all the positions have been discussed. If you have any ideas or suggestions, please mail me Richard@sharksworld.co.za
