Another spat looming over “injured Boks”

The Sharks today confirmed that their own medical staff will assess any of their contracted players who are deemed unfit to tour with the Springboks in the Tri-Nations.

The Springbok medical team announced a group of 21 players that were unavailable to be named for the tour squad, which will be named on Saturday, owing to injuries sustained during the course of the Super Rugby season. There is widespread speculation that this injury list is really a smokescreen to hide the fact that the Boks want to send a weakened side to Australia and New Zealand in order to keep their likely World Cup starters rested and fit. The announcement has already pissed the Australians off to no end, so I suppose in that sense it has already a huge amount of good.

The assumption was that the injured players would be put in cotton wool and possibly wheeled out for the home leg of the Tri Nations, depending on fitness. For Beast Mtawarira, Willem Alberts, JP Pietersen and the du Plessis brothers, though, this might not happen, since the Sharks seem hell bent on playing these guys in the Currie Cup should the medical team in Durban feel they are fit enough. Our information is that Alberts does have a properly stuffed shoulder, meaning it would be madness to play him any further, but the injuries picked up by the other four players are definitely new and of a slightly more spurious nature.

The Sharks, it seems, are to call SARU’s bluff here and if any of the guys who come back aren’t really injured, I guess they will be expected to play Currie Cup and I suspect the shit may just hit the fan at that point…

More as we get it.
