ITM Cup – Week 11 Preview

Week 11 see’s 7 matches that all look hard to call, with just the one a cross-over fixture. Just 4 points covers the top 5 spots in the Premiership and means that those that have aspirations of finals football need to be kicking into top gear – now!

Week 10 Review

The big freeze left a lasting impression in the minds of southerners in Round 10 of the ITM Cup as the much hyped opening ITM Cup match of the new Forsyth Barr Stadium was postponed due to snow curtailing team travel plans.

Week 10 saw the continuation from Tasman of a stellar run of form, when they comprehensively out competed their Premiership opponents Auckland in every facet of the battle. This really just continued the encouraging form that the Mako’s have displayed over the last three weeks- except this time they got over the line. With Otago v Manawatu postponed that only left the South Aucklanders win against North Harbour the sole remaining match in the round.

Game 51 Counties Manukau (40) v (32) North Harbour Prediction: Counties Manukau by 10-15 points

Match Previews – Week 11

Game 53 Wellington v Southland Prediction: Wellington by 10-15 points

This potentially is the biggest game of the season to date for these two side as the winner will leap-frog the other on the Premiership table, and put them one step closer to staving off relegation and therefore Championship rugby in 2012 (not that there really seems any difference in the standard).

Game 54 Canterbury v Taranaki Prediction: Canterbury by 10-15 points

With 4 points blanketing the top 5 spots in the Premiership this shapes as a must win for both sides . Canterbury will be bolstered by All Black Corey Flynn returning at Hooker. It will also be the last ditch chance of both openside flankers to convince the All Black selectors that they are the men to back up the All Black Captain at the fast loom RWC. Adam Thomson’s efforts in Port Elizabeth 24 hours later will be the final audition before the big decision is made (Matt Todd and Scott Waldrom will still be holding out hope).

Game 55 Auckland v Bay of Plenty Prediction: Bay of Plenty by 10-15 points

Auckland will be pleased to be home after being comprehensively blown away at the breakdown midweek by the Mako’s. If that is a weakness then it is a strength of this BOP outfit. It may again be a decisive factor. Bay of Plenty have dropped three matches in a row and could again make it four, but they are sure to be well in this contest against an Auckland side that has struggled to hit its straps in 2011.

Game 56 North Harbour v Northland Prediction: North Harbour by 5-10 points

Both of these sides have been in topsy-turvy form all year. The Harbour side may just have enough here to squeeze past their neighbours.

Game 57 Manawatu v Waikato Prediction: Waikato by 10-15 points

This is the only cross-over clash of the round. Manawatu are arguably the form side of the ITM Cup with outstanding results all season. However Waikato are a form outfit that is running into a bit of form at the right time of the season – something they usually make a habit of.

Game 58 Tasman v Otago Prediction: Tasman by 15-20 points

Tasman really impressed last time out and if they have just a slice of that form during this contest it should be enough to topple the Otago lads.

Game 59 Hawke’s Bay v Counties Manukau Prediction: Hawke’s Bay by 10-15 points

This always looked like a potential Championship final at the start of the season and yet may be. Hawke’s Bay were reinforced last time out by All Blacks Izzy Dagg and mate Zac Guildford, such chemistry will be missing this time around giving the South Aucklanders every chance to be in this contest at the end.
