What’s the French for “caveat emptor” anyway?

If you’re one of the many Bok fans shaking your head in dismay at the news that dear old Bakkies Botha has been ruled out of the World Cup without ever really getting into it, spare a thought for the poor souls on the Cote d’Azure who may just have been forced to spit out their croissants after this latest development.

Let’s call a spade a spade here, shall we? Bakkies, after all, must be starting to look like a pretty dodgy investment even in today’s post-Lehman Brothers world, what with a penchant for injury that has now seen him injure three different parts of his body since arriving in New Zealand… pretty impressive considering he picked up two of those in training and the other playing 50 minutes against the might of Namibia. Stack that up against a three-year contract that’s rumoured to be worth a total of €2100000 (yes, that is something like R20 Million unless the Euro has shed another zero whilst I type this) and at the current rate, Bakkies looks likely to be earning about R100k for every minute he’ll spend on the field over three years.

Scary stuff indeed for the Toulon boys, who may possibly be stubbing out their Gaulloises as we speak to reach for said contract, in order to desperately comb through the fine print. Having already failed to sign Bakkies once (remember that incident?) it would be somewhat ironic should this latest injury plague scupper his second attempt to play for les rouge et noir.
