Continuity for under 19s

Sharks under 19 coach Ryan Strudwick has kept faith in the starting 15 that pulled off a good win against their Western Province counterparts last week, with the side named to face the Leopards in Phokeng showing just one change on the bench.

Glenwood prop Deucullen van der Merwe comes onto the bench in the number 17 to replace Pretoria Boys High’s Simon Kerrod, while Nico van Dyk and captain Allan Dell reprise their roles as starting props. Such is the uniqueness of van der Merwe’s first name, by the way, that I honestly believe he may be the only person christened “Deucullen” in the entire world. Certainly Google doesn’t seem to know about anyone else with that name and nor does FaceBook…. and let’s face it, what other proof could you need of a person’s actual existence?

The backline retains its youthful look, with wing Siyabonga Tom, centres Tyler Fisher and Dean Moolman and flyhalf Rob du Preez all still currently at school. Moolman, incidentally, seems to have this strange fascination with playing for the Bulls when he leaves school but let’s hope that now he’s getting game time for the Sharks, he’ll change his mind about that. Once you’ve tasted black (and white) you’ll never go back, or so they say! Reserve scrumhalf, Stefan Ungerer, is also still at school this year.

Once again, it’s good to see the next generation of Sharks legends coming through here, with flyhalf du Preez and number 8 Guy Alexander the son and nephew respectively of Sharks greats Robert du Preez and Gary Teichmann.
