The Sharks head to Coca-Cola Park today aiming to defend the Currie Cup title that they won last year.

The Lions, playing at home, seem to have the majority of the public support – particularly from neutrals keen to see them break their 12-year trophy drought. The Sharks, though, have a stronger quad on paper, although some inconsistent showings throughout the competition see most pundtis backing the Lions to squeak a close game, thanks mostly to a perceived greater sense of cohesion and team spirit.

Both sides are coached by Kiwis – John Plumtree and John Mitchell hailing from the same North Island backwater of Hawera – although the two men have both played down the role that their personal rivalry, as well as close friendship, might play in today’s encounter.

Kick-off at Coce Cola Park is at 17h30 today.
