Coetzee forced into early retirement

Former Sharks front ranker Eduard Coetzee has been forced to call time on his playing career following medical advice. The popular former Affies pupil, currently playing for Biarritz in France, risks serious brain injury if he continues to play rugby.

Coetzee was born and raised in Pretoria, attending Affies and Tuks – and representing the Bulls at age group and Vodacom Cup level – before making Durban his home in 2001. He went on to represent the Sharks for four years, emerging as a real stalwart during the turbulent Kevin Putt years, before casting in his lost and heading to France, where he joined Bayonne in 2005. Moving to Biarritz in 2007, he quickly become a fan favourite at the Basque club and was set to play on until at least 2013, when his current contract expires.

Coetzee’s dream of playing on has been dashed, though, as a result of three serious head knocks already this season, which have given two separate neurologists cause to rule him out of any further contact, at the risk of lasting damage. “For me it is over as far as rugby is concerned,” Coetzee confirmed to SAPA.

We’d like to wish Eddie all the best for whatever his future holds.
