Stormers bolster halfback ranks

The Stormers have confirmed that out-of-contract flyhalf Burton Francis is training with their Super Rugby squad in the hopes of securing a deal ahead of the 2012 competition.

Francis, who left the Bulls a few years back to join the Lions in the interests of more gametime fell rapidly down the Lions pecking order last year, despite a bright start to his career there. With the Stormers forced to rely on a successively inexperienced bunch of flyhalf options last year following injury problems, along with the expected late arrival of Peter Grant from Japan, the door would appear to be slightly ajar for a player of Francis’s calibre and experience to force his way in ahead of the likes of Kurt Coleman or Gary van Aswegen.

A number of Boland players will also come into the Stormers reckoning next year, including veteran former-Bok scrumhalf Bolla Conradie, who is currently training with the side. Another promising flyhalf, Bolander Elgar Watts, is currently recovering from an operation, but may also come into the selection frame once fully fit.
