Erasmus linked to Bok role

Weekend newspaper speculation has linked Rassie Erasmus to a permanent technical advisor role with the Springboks, suggesting that the former WP director of rugby will be roped in as a key assistant to the new Bok coach when he is named on 27 January.

Furthermore, Stormers defence guru Jacques Nienaber and national Sevens coach Paul Treu were, according to the story, due to play a role in the national setup as well. Erasmus, it is claimed, is on his way to France in a bid to sell some technology that he has developed to clubs over there, rather than to seek a coaching position with any French side. He has, though, poured cold water on all of these allegations, dismissing the entire story as pure speculation.

It is further believed that SARU are split down the middle, with the executive unable to separate Heyneke Meyer and Gert Smal as candidates for the Bok coaching job. With the announcement only 11 days away, any thoughts that assistants and advisers to the new coach could already have been appointed seem quite laughable, as I’m sure all of the national body’s efforts are now focused on deciding on a chosen candidate to take up the so-called “poisoned chalice”.

As always when it comes to Rassie Erasmus, trying to get to the bottom of what’s really going on is a tricky matter indeed!
