Ranger cited

Blues outside back Rene Ranger, yellow and white carded in the final minute of the Bulls-v-Blues match in Pretoria on Saturday, has been cited for the diving, no-arms tackle that saw Bjorn Basson illegally taken out in the process of scoring his side’s third try.

An initial review of the footage by the citing commissioner has established that the offence warranted a red card and SANZAR duty judicial officer Mike Heron will now consider the matter further.

Ranger flew into Basson in a reckless and dangerous tackle that appeared to contravene Law 10.4 (e) in the final movement of the match, with the Bulls winger struggling to get to his feet afterwards. Adding further to the controversy, referee Steve Walsh refused to award a penalty to the Bulls after the hooter, insisting that Morne Steyn’s touchline conversion would be the final act of the game. In slotting that kick, he gave his side a valuable bonus point, but the Bulls may have fancied their chances of scoring again had they been awarded a penalty on the centre spot – a fourth score would have given them 5 points from the game, instead of just one.

We expect to hear more regarding a suspension for Ranger in the next 24 hours.
