Meyer’s captain to accept his destiny?

Ok, let me apologise up-front for the ridiculous headline – but in a move that’s unlikely to really shock anyone, former Bulls scrumhalf Fourie du Preez has hinted that he might reconsider his decision to retire from international rugby.

Du Preez is one of a handful of Bulls stalwarts who enjoy a perticularly close relationship with new Bok mentor Heyneke Meyer, with the coach going on the record earlier this year to say that he’s consider du Preez as an interim captain if given the chance. It’s understood that many of these erstwhile Loftus legends were disappointed indeed when Meyer was beaten to the Bok job back in 2008 and made decisions to retire based on the incorrect assumption that their man wouldn’t get the nod in 2012 either.

Well, in the case of du Preez, it seems the man widely considered the best scrumhalf in the world a year or two back has now realised that he has ‘unfinished business’ with the Boks and looks keen to go a few more rounds, with his favourite coach in the driving seat. Only time will tell whether he will be appointed captain to boot, but I know where my money would be…
