Saders rotate for Rebels

Richie McCaw may have been named to captain the Crusaders team for the first time this season as they head to Melbourne to take on the Rebels, but that doesn’t mean that coach Todd Blackadder has opted to play his strongest combinations across the board.

With five changes in total to the side that scraped home against the Reds on Sunday, Blackadder appears to be making a statement of some sort, although whether he’s saying that the Reds performance simply wasn’t good enough, or that he expects the Rebels to pose less of a challenge is not clear at the moment. Certainly given how close the Melbourne side came to upsetting the Bulls in Round 11, it’s unlikely that a coach as experienced as Blackadder would be underestimating the threat they pose.

Wyatt Crockett comes in for Ben Franks as the only change to the tight five, while McCaw and Luke Whitelock will enjoy their first starts of the campaign at openside and number 8 respectively. Last week’s skipper, Kieran Read, finds himself warming the bench.

Willi Heinz is in for Andy Ellis at scrumhalf, with Tom Marshall replacing Israel Dagg at fullback.

Lock Tom Donnelly was a late withdrawal from the team that played the Reds and his inclusion on the bench this week will be subject to a fitness test. Ross Kennedy is poised to replace him in the number 18 jersey should he drop out again.
