Bok Squad contains no surprises if we sit back and think for a minute

There’s been a huge uproar over the make up of the Bok squad due to the large numbers of Bulls and Sharks in the squad and the absence of Stormers stalwarts such as Joe Pietersen, Peter Grant, Gio Aplon and Juan De Jongh. The reality though is that Heyneke Meyer has been hamstrung by the fact that he only has a week to spend with the Boks before the first test match against England. Actually less than a week since training would only begin in earnest on Monday after 2 grudge matches on the weekend!

I was as surprised as everyone else by the team but, now that I’ve had a chance to think about it, the squad makes sense. Heyneke’s given the 50-50 calls to players he knows from the Bulls because he’s spent years there, knows them well, has their trust and knows that they know his gameplan. You can’t (despite the training camps) teach new players a new gameplan and get them to gel within one week. It’s just impossible no matter how talented the players are or how experienced.

I think that the Rugby Championship Squad will show a few significant differences in composition as Heyneke will then have more time to work with his squad. The end of year tour will also bring forth a few changes and we’ll finally begin to understand the coach’s thinking and where he wants to go. Let’s not crucify him for having to fall back on what he knows but rather give him the chance to prove himself and get 100% behind the Boks!!
