No Elstadt for Lions game

The Stormers have been dealt yet another loose forward blow – they’ll be without Rynhardt Elstadt when their Super Rugby campaign resumes against the Lions in 3 weeks’ time. The big utility forward has received a one-match ban from SANZAR Judicial Officer Mike Heron.

We’ve received a number of queries throughout the course of the season relating to the purpose of the “off-field yellow card” and in Elstadt’s case, we now finally have a little clarity as to exactly what purpose these serve. Elstadt was issued an off-field card (along with the Bulls’ Arno Botha) for the part he played in a scuffle during the Loftus derby a fortnight ago. Having already picked up two other yellows in the campaign, this third card (even though it was awarded off-field) triggered Elstadt’s summoning in front of a disciplinary hearing, with the resulting ban handed down.

The Stormers should expect to have some big guns returning for them after the Test break, though, but will have learned from the Sharks and certainly won’t be underestimating the Lions. The Cape side have been aided by capitulations by both the Sharks and the Bulls and are now sitting pretty in terms of South African conference honours – with the added bonus of home-ground advantage in the Super Rugby semi-finals to follow.
