Coetzee on injuries and potential signings

Western Province received some good news over the weekend, as two of their stars in the Springbok squad were left behind, with Juan de Jongh and Siya Kolisi being able to take part in Currie Cup action this weekend.

It is a bitter sweet feeling for coach Allister Coetzee, who is sad that his players are not representing the national side, but will be relieved to receive a timely boost ahead of their clash against the Lions in Johannesburg.

With news that debutant Ederies Arendse might not be fit to face the Lions this week, it is likely that Gio Aplon will shift across to the wing, and a fullback be slotted in while Joe Pietersen recovers. Pietersen is believed to be two weeks away from action.

With Juan de Jongh back in the selection frame, it is likely that he will join Marcel Brache in midfield, meaning JP du Plessis would likely revert to the bench. Siya Kolisi’s inclusion comes at the perfect time, with Deon Fourie having done flanker duties but now required in the front row thanks to Tiaan Liebenberg’s call up to the Springboks.

Fourie sat out training on Monday, but he will be okay to take the field this weekend, and will lead the team once again. In other team news, Coetzee hinted that he may rest Dewaldt Duvenhage for another week, following an impressive display from Louis Schreuder. Nick Koster is still on the sidelines, with a return to club action in two weeks’ time a time frame on his return.

In completely unrelated news, Coetzee hinted to Die Burger that he may look at some of the Lions players ahead of Super Rugby 2013, stating that he knows that certain players have clauses releasing them from their contracts should the Lions not take part in Super Rugby. A name that Coetzee singled out was that of Elton Jantjes, stating that he is a danger man against his Western Province side in their clash this weekend.

The Lions got confirmation last week that they will not take part in Super Rugby 2013, which could mean a player exodus for the union. It is only a matter of time until the stars in the Lions setup, particularly the Springboks and nearly-Boks, such as Jantjes, Pat Cilliers, Josh Strauss and Jaco Taute find their way to other, Super Rugby playing franchises.
