Kolisi the latest Province casualty

The latest injury blow in what is starting to seem a little like a sick joke for Western Province – particularly among the loose forwards – has come with the news that star flanker Siya Kolisi will play no further role this season.

Province coach Allister Coetzee confirmed yesterday that Kolisi suffered a broken thumb during his side’s narrow loss to the Lions this weekend. He will require surgery to mend the break and will thus be out of action for at least the rest of the year. Province have already lost Schalk Burger and Nizaam Carr for the season, while Duane Vermuelen has only just returned from injury and Nick Koster and Rynhardt Elstadt are both currently on the injured list too. Adding Kolisi’s name to that list means they will need to dip even further into their Vodacom Cup loose forward pool to get them through the Currie Cup.

Kolisis’s injury is as ironic as it is tragic. Having just secured a maiden call up to the Bok squad, he has been released for just this one game (having missed out on the tour squad for Argentina) and was widely tipped to be named in the next squad to tour to Australia and New Zealand, given the poor performance of the Bok loosies in Mendoza on Saturday night. His Bok dream is in tatters as a result of this one and will presumably need to wait until 2013 or beyond before pulling on that green jersey for the first time.

Province are expected to lose yet another loose forward this week, with Duane Vermeluen likely to be named in the Bok squad on Tuesday.
