John Plumtree admitted on Saturday night that his squad were suffering due to the sheer number of players unavailable for the Currie cup match. Plum also noted that for a few players this season represented the first senior Currie cup campaign that they were participating in.

Plumtree added that his young team has to learn from the bad experience that they had at Loftus after having good experiences against Western Province and the Lions. The challenge was to play better against the Cheetahs this coming weekend. It was not all about the youngsters though. When a team has this many young players in it the senior players have to step up and Plum admitted that the leadership from the senior players was poor on the night. This also has to rectified if the Sharks are to beat the Cheetahs in Durban this coming weekend.

The performance of Monde Hadebe came under scrutiny with Plum acknowledging that the young rake had a pretty good run on debut. “The lineouts were bad but Monde was only a part of that, the locks also have to play their part” he added.

As for what went wrong, Plum said “They dominated the advantage line, they played well from turnovers and they bullied us at times”. The Sharks coach also admitted that the visiting side did not defend the wide channels well enough and the set pieces were also not good enough. All these factors added to result in the Sharks’ first defeat of the Currie cup season.

It was not all negative at the press conference was negative though. Plum was pleased with the bonus point, saying that it could be crucial when it comes to the final standings.
