Another captain on the sidelines

Australia’s ‘captain’s curse’ has struck yet again, with the second stand-in captain, Will Genia, suffering a season ending injury, with the Wallabies now looking for their fourth in line leader.

Will Genia left the field in the second half against the Springboks and was seen after the match with a heavily iced knee, with scans the following day confirming the worst, Genia ruled out of rugby for at least six months.

Genia’s injury comes a few weeks after original stand-in captain David Pocock injured himself against the All Blacks and being ruled out of the remainder of the Rugby Championship. This comes after James Horwill tore his hamstring earlier in the year and it remains to be seen when he will be back to lead the team.

In the meantime, coach Robbie Deans has joked that he will not name a formal captain, in case this player also breaks down, and will instead have a leadership group and one of those players leading the team onto the field.
