Malherbe gets call from Heyneke

Frans Malherbe has been summoned by Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer to cover the sudden shortage of tighthead props in the tour group.

The Western Province tighthead will fly to New Zealand and will in all likelihood get his first cap, whether as a starter or from the bench, as both Jannie du Plessis and Pat Cilliers picked up injuries in the loss to Australia last weekend. Both du Plessis and Cilliers are doubtful starters for this weekend’s clash against the All Blacks.

Malherbe was part of the training squad before the England series, but did not take part in any of the match day 22’s.

Meyer is yet to make a call on the second row replacement for Eben Etzebeth, but at this stage it looks likely that the coach will replace him from within the squad, with both Flip van der Merwe and Willem Alberts able to wear the four jersey.
