Lions get the other Boshoff

Griquas signed a lot of players at the start of this year in the hopes of finally nailing down that elusive top-four Currie Cup spot and while we’re not yet sure whether they’ve managed to achieve that feat, they do seem to be offloading a few of the “spares” who proved less useful than was hoped.

Former Bulls and (briefly) Ospreys centre Stefan Watermeyer confirmed a few weeks back that the Pumas would be his rugby home for 2013, after failing to establish himself in the Griquas midfield ahead of Walter Venter, JP Nel and Jean Stemmet. Beeld revealed today that another former Bull is on his way too, with flyhalf Marnitz Boshoff agreeing to join the Lions next year.

Boshoff has been involved in a bit of a personal duel with Francois Brümmer for most of his career and with both opting to leave the Bulls for Griquas at the same time, that rivalry only continued this year. Brümmer duly emerged as the winner – again – and is now firmly entrenched in the umber 10 jersey in Kimberley, leaving Boshoff to seek yet another new pasture.

Boshoff’s brother Ruan made a similar move to the Lions some years back, but failed to crack it into the senior side and instead ended up playing for the rather less than glamorous TUT Vikings in this year’s Varsity Cup.
