According to reports doing the rounds this morning, Gurthrö Steenkamp is favourite to wear the number 1 jersey against Scotland this weekend, following the withdrawal of Tendai Mtawarira from the squad this week.

Die Burger reports that Steenkamp has impressed during training so far this week, after not being considered for the test against Ireland due to an injury. Mtawarira was withdrawn hours before the test and was replaced by CJ van der Linde.

Despite van der Linde coming through the test unscathed, the form of Steenkamp could mean he jumps van der Linde in the pecking order and starting the Scotland test. Heinke van der Merwe came onto the bench for last week’s match and with the impact he made off the bench, will be hoping to retain his place in the match 23.

CJ van der Linde is a versatile prop and could still be utilised on the tighthead side, where coach Heyneke Meyer has Jannie du Plessis and Pat Cilliers to choose from, and has to decide how he wants to use his six props who include Frans Malherbe, who was called upon to replace Mtawarira.

Other news filtering through from the team in Scotland is that Jean de Villiers might be rested for this match against Scotland, with Juan de Jongh finally getting a shot in midfield and Adriaan Strauss taking over the captaincy. This is yet to be confirmed though, and we will wait for the team announcement.
