Carter beats Farrell – eventually!

All Black flyhalf Dan Carter may not have been able to do much against English flyhalf Owen Farrell on the rugby field last Saturday, but gained a measure of revenge when he beat his northern rival to the IRB Player of the Year award in London yesterday.

Farrell’s inclusion on a strange shortlist for the award raised a few eye-brows, as , to a lesser extent, did Fred Michalak’s. Carter, in winning for the second time ahead of teammate and three-time winner Richie McCaw, completed a New Zealand trifecta at the awards ceremony.

Kiwi coach Steve Hansen won Coach of the Year in his first campaign as head coach of the All Blacks, with the NEw Zealanders also winning Team of the Year after capturing the Rugby Championship and Bledisloe Cup trophies in a year that saw a draw against Australia and the shock loss to England as the only matches they didn’t win.
