Bulls clinch Soweto thriller

A late flurry of tries saw the Bulls clinch a 38-32 victory over the Golden Lions at Orlando Stadium on Saturday, after the Johannesburg side had fought back valiantly to sneak ahead during the third quarter.

Bulls centre Jan Serfontein made the most of his chances in the first half, scoring the opener and also setting up the third as his side raced away to a 19-3 lead. Staring down the barrel of a big hiding, the Lions then upped their game, with two tries of their own – the first to former Bulls lock Franco Mostert – two bring them within two points, before a penalty to Bulls flyhalf Tiaan Schoeman stretched the Pretoria side’s lead to 22-17 heading into half time.

A try shortly after half-time by live wire Lions winger Anthony Volminck saw the men from Ellis Park briefly take the lead – at 27-25 – before a brace of Bulls penalties erased that cushion. The Bulls finally made it safe when Jurgen Visser scored his second and despite a late consolation by flank Jaco Kriel (also his second in the match), the Lions were left ruing their missed opportunities.

The scorers:
Tries: Franco Mostert, Jaco Kriel 2, Anthony Volmink
Cons: Marnitz Boshoff 3
Pen: Boshoff
DG: Boshoff

Tries: Jan Serfontein, Jurgen Visser 2, Grant Hattingh
Cons: Tian Schoeman 2, Handre Pollard
Pens: Schoeman 3, Pollard
