Sharks XV keep up the momentum

Vodacom Cup flyhalf Fred Zeilinga once again underlined his credentials, as the Sharks XV recorded yet another close, but significant, win on Saturday. Zeilinga’s goal-kicking and all-round play were a big factor in the side’s 34-33 win over Free State at Kings Park on Saturday afternoon.

In a see-sawing game between two evenly-matched sides, the Sharks XV never established any sort of a comfortable lead and it was only a missed conversion by Free State’s Tewis de Bruyn that enabled the hosts to take a two-point advantage into the half-time break, after each side has managed two tries. For the Sharks XV, Sizo Maseko opened the scoring after Zeilinga and de Bruyn had traded penalties. Free State then scored twice, before Zeilinga himself added the full seven points to give his side a 20-18 lead.

The visitors scored first after the break, with de Bruyn again missing the conversion in the tricky wind. Another penalty – after two more misses – saw the Sharks starring down the barrel of a 6-point defeat with less than a quarter of the game to play. They again showed a lot of character, though, to score twice in the final ten minutes, once through wing S’bura Sithole, then again through hooker Franco Marais, with Zeilinga nailing both conversions. With the bonus point – and the win – already in the bag, Free State’s consolation try right at the death could only secure them two bonus points.

Zeilinga extended his lead at the top of the individual points-scoring table and the Sharks VX likewise now enjoy a 3-point buffer at the top of the South Section log.

Sharks XV – Tries: Sizo Maseko, Fred Zeilinga, S’bura Sithole, Franco Marais; Conversions: Zeilinga(4); Penalties: Zeilinga(2)
Free State XV – Tries: Rossouw de Klerk, Joubert Engelbrecht, Elandre Huggett, Freddie Ngoza: Conversions: Tewis de Bruyn (2); Penalties: De Bruyn (3)
