Sharks get the week off

In celebration of their great win over the Rebels on Saturday, the entire Sharks squad have been given the week off.

Coach John Plumtree will, of course, be thrilled that the combination of a looming bye, coupled with a good result in the game before, has given him the leeway to give his squad a complete break from rugby, given the physical and mental demands placed on the squad during a ridiculously-long season. With a crunch home game against the Crusaders coming up after the Easter Weekend, rested minds and bodies are a must, although I’m pretty sure that the coach would be approaching this challenge quite differently had his charges not risen to the Rebels challenge the way they did.

The downside, from a fan perspective, is that there’s unlikely to be much – or in fact any – news coming out of the Sharks camp this week. In particular, injury prognoses on the likes of Marcell Coetzee and Lwazi Mvovo will need to wait until next Tuesday at the earliest. There does appear to be some concern, though, over Mvovo’s hand injury at this stage with talk that he may be out of action for a month or more.
