Marais linked with French switch

According to a report in France’s Sud Ouest Newspaper, Sharks lock forward Jandre Marais may have signed a contract to join French Top 14 side Union Bordeaux Bègles.

As is typically the case with these French reports, there’s not a lot of detail (or even an English translation of the story), so things like dates, duration and impact on current contract barely warrant a mention. In the past, we’ve seen these reports insisting that a foreign player has “signed” with a French club turn out to be all hot air, and the merest indication of interest from a player, or talks with an agent, often end up reported as concrete signings in the French media long before anyone has reached for a pen.

Sharksworld has asked a number of sources for comment, including Marais’ family, his agent and the Sharks themselves and will publish a firm commitment (or, as I expect, denial) as soon as we receive one.

Marais has had a tricky last 12 months in Durban, going from a very credible Super Rugby debut to not featuring for the first side at all and the fact that he’s been playing Vodacom Cup rugby, behind a loan player from the Lions and a 20-year-old with no Currie Cup experience would certainly be the sort of factors encouraging him to make a move away from the Sharks.
