Bismarck return imminent

The Sharks have released a full injury report for the first time this season, giving us all a clear picture of their current view of when players are expected to be back in action. The good news for Sharks and Bok fans alike is that hooker Bismarck du Plessis is expected to be fit for selection in time for the Sharks return from their Australian tour.

This will bring the fiery Bok into selection contention for the post-tour clash against the Bulls at Kings Park, a real potential banana peel for the weary tour group. Flyhalf Butch James is also likely to be ready to play in that match, if selected.

Craig Burden’s prognosis is as yer unclear – he’s the most recent injury casualty – but of the others on the list, only Paul Jordaan’s ACL injury appears to be season-ending. The young centre has been given 9 months out, but the bulk of the other injuries are exepcted to clear up within the 6-8 week time frame, meaning that should the Sharks manage to progress as far as the knock-out phase, they may find themselves strengthened considerably.

Here’s the injury list as it stands. We’ve added a column indicating which match in the season each player should be targeting for a comeback, based on the durations given.

Name of Player Injury Approximate Return Match
Allan Dell MCL strain, right knee 4 weeks Blues
Cobus Reinach Left ankle ligament sprain 6 weeks Blues
Craig Burden Cervical disc dysfunction Not established as yet ?
Dale Chadwick Stress fracture 6 weeks Blues
Francois Steyn Acute compartment syndrome, left lower leg 6 weeks Blues
Jacques Botes Right forearm fracture 8 weeks Bulls 2

Marius Joubert Right hand fracture 6 weeks Blues
Paul Jordaan Left knee ACL disruption 9 months 2014
