Strike four for Beale

After completing the shortest alcohol rehabilitation program in history, Rebels fullback Kurtley Beale appears to have fallen right back off the bus. It’s a mercy, if you think about it, since at least that way his team mates should be safe from physical violence…

Beale, who has a long-standing alcohol issue, was sent home from his side’s tour of South Africa earlier this year, after getting drunk after a match and punching a team mate. He was duly stood down from the squad and told to seek counselling for his issues. It was thus quite surprising to see him back in action for the Rebels just last week, after clearly paying nothing more than lip-service to whatever program he was meant to be following.

Well, it’s come back to bite him once more. Beale has been re-suspended for breaching protocol this week, by going out drinking with team-mates and also missing a mandatory counseling session. Let’s hope, for the sake of the player and his family and friends, that the powers that be will force Beale to actually get some proper and lasting help this time, rather than simply buggering around.

Force winger Alfie Maafi was also released from his contract this week for disciplinary breaches.
