Watson returns to Newlands

Luke Watson will be returning to Newlands to lead the Southern Kings against the Stormers after he left the province at the end of 2009. Watson moved to Cape Town after leaving the Sharks in 2004 where he played for the Stormers at Super Rugby and Western Province at Currie Cup level.

Watson’s achievements at the province include captaining the sides in 33 appearances stretching from 2006 to 2009. Watson also scored 5 tries for the Stormers during the 2007 Super Rugby season, only the second forward to accomplish this achievement after Bobby Skinstad. Watson was also named as the Currie Cup Player of the Year in 2009.

After finishing his stint at English club Bath in 2010, he decided to return to Port Elizabeth to help the Southern Kings in their quest to play Super Rugby. Its been a roller-coaster ride so far for Watson after he got injured in their first match against the Force, he missed their over seas tour and struggled in his first few games back after injury. He was however superb in their 34 – 27 win over the Highlanders and scored 2 of his teams 4 tries.

Watson is not the only Southern Kings player to have played his rugby in the Cape. Demetri Catrakilis played for Western Province last year, he was also the man that stood between the Sharks and the Currie Cup in the 2012 final. With the Stormers opting to recruit the services of Elton Jantjies, Catrakilis probably thought it would be best to take the Southern Kings up on their offer and joined the franchise for the 2013 Super Rugby season. Catrakilis has played in all the Kings Super Rugby games and his name is next to almost all of the Kings records. Catrakilis also features among the most of everything that involves the boot in this years Super Rugby competition. Allowing him to play so many games, maybe something that wouldn’t have happened at the Stormers, gave him a call to join the Springbok training squad ahead of their incoming tours. There are however some concerns around his availability for Saturdays match against the Stormers, and the team will only be announced on Thursday.

Another Kings player who’s also played bit of rugby for Province and the Stormers is Schalk Ferreira. Ferreira played for Western Province in the Vodacom Cup side in 2005, Currie Cup side in 2006 and was included in the Stormers Super Rugby squad in 2007. Jacques Engelbrecht is another player that started his rugby at Newlands before moving to SWD Eagles in 2008. Southern Kings winger Marcello Sampson also started his junior rugby at Western Province.

It seems like it will be a home coming for a few Southern Kings players when they run out on Newlands on Saturday, and some of them might just be hoping that after the game the union will regret letting them go in the first place.
