Here’s a little bit of news for old and new readers of the site alike. In a sudden fit of inspiration, I took the plunge and upgraded Sharksworld to the latest version of WordPress last night.

Now, as upgrades go, this was a pretty smooth process and I haven’t yet found any glitches. That doesn’t mean, though, that there aren’t any unexpected consequences, so if you do find something isn’t working the way it should, do be so kind as to email me and tell me what it is.

The upgrade has given us some cool new features, though, which I’m hoping will make the site easier to use and also encourage more people to sign in and join the discussion. Perhaps the most significant of these is…

Facebook and Twitter Login

If you have a look at the updated login page, below the normal boxes to enter your Sharksworld username and password (if you have one), you should see buttons with the Facebook and Twitter logos, allowing you to select to login in with your existing account on one of those platforms. For those of you who have not yet signed up for a Sharksworld account, this makes it a lot easier to quickly get started and your email address, name and profile picture (avatar) from Facebook or Twitter will come across to Sharksworld.

If you already have a Sharksworld account and you want to migrate to using Facebook or Twitter to log in, you need to first change your Sharksworld profile to ensure that it is set to use the same email address as your Facebook/Twitter account. If you have done that, then your existing Sharksworld account should be picked up and linked to your Twitter/Facebook account the first time you log in. Note that Twitter may not share your email address by default, so in order to ensure this works, double-check that on Twitter.

Do give us some feedback as to whether this option works for you and also if there are other social networks that you’d like to see integrated as well.

Other stuff

The only other major change is that the comment editing feature now works better than it used to. You will now have 15 minutes after posting your own comment in which you can edit it – and there’s also a spell-check feature integrated into the editor.

Note also that there’s an option to subscribe to new posts by email. This is managed by WordPress.com on behalf of Sharksworld. If you want to be emailed notification of new stories on the site, simply check the “Notify me of new posts by email” box before you next make a comment.

Please let us know via the comments if there’s anything else you’d like to see here to make your Sharksworld experience more enjoyable.

Have fun!
