Pollard at 10 as Junior Boks rotate

SA under 20 coach Dawie Theron, needing only a single point from today’s Junior World Championship game against host nation France, has opted to freshen up his team by making some rotational changes.

The IRB rules for the competition stipulate that each player in the traveling squad must be afforded game-time during the tournament and with Theron having used a settled first team against both the USA and England, this match represents the last opportunity to have a look at some of the others before the semi-finals.

It’s primarily among the backline where the changes have come; Sharks scrumhalf Stefan Ungerer has had a nasty dental appointment this week and will get to sit this game out, with his partner, flyhalf Rob du Preez, playing off the bench. Hanco Venter starts his first game at scrumhalf in Ungerer’s place. Handre Pollard will operate at flyhalf, with Bulls team mates Rohan Janse van Rensburg and Dries Swanepoel operating in the centres. Swanepoel replaces the injured Justin Geduld, while Janse van Rensburg makes his first appearance of the campaign in the inside centre jersey worn by Pollard in the opening games.

Some might argue that it’s up-front where change is most needed, given the Boks’ lack of effectiveness in both the scrums and at the breakdown against England; Theron has seen fit to address the former by replacing both props. Sharks boy Marne Coetzee is in for Luan de Bruin at tighthead, with Sti Sithole, late of Westville Boys High but now with WP, replacing Andrew Beerwinkel at loose. The second and third rows, however, remain unchanged.

Changes on the bench see Lions scrumhalf Percy Williams and Bulls prop Devon Martinus appear in a match 23 for the first time.

South Africa Under 20: 15 Cheslin Kolbe, 14 Luther Obi, 13 Dries Swanepoel, 12 Rohan Janse van Rensburg, 11 Seabelo Senatla, 10 Handré Pollard, 9 Hanco Venter, 8 Ruan Steenkamp, 7 Jacques du Plessis, 6 Roelof Smit, 5 Dennis Visser, 4 Irné Herbst, 3 Marné Coetzee, 2 Jacques du Toit, 1 Sti Sithole.
Replacements: 16 Andrew Beerwinkel, 17 Mike Willemse, 18 Jannes Kirsten, 19 Aidon Davis, 20 Percy Williams, 21 Robert du Preez, 22 Jesse Kriel, 23 Devon Martinus.
