Jean gets a break

The Stormers will be without captain Jean de Villiers for the match against the Cheetahs this weekend, and could potentially sit out the rest of the Super Rugby season.

de Villiers has been given the week off following a gruelling set of Springbok tests, where he had to prove his match fitness twice yet still led the national side. The side strain that led to him having to prove his fitness is what is officially keeping him on the sidelines this weekend. Coach Allister Coetzee said that resting de Villiers was in the interest of the national side.

Coetzee went on to say that he is not sure yet when de Villiers will play again, stating that a new captain will be appointed for this weekend’s match and potentially for the rest of the season.

All the returning Springboks were given the day off from training yesterday, and while Eben Etzebeth and Siya Kolisi took full advantage of some time off, Bryan Habana still attended training, showing his appetite for Super Rugby.

Coetzee went on to say that he will take advice from the Springbok national doctors on which players to play, but will play fringe players like Gio Aplon and Juan de Jongh, as they have not played in a while and are in need of game time.

Other players which are still injured include Pat Cilliers, Michael Rhodes and Rynhardt Elstadt while potential captains for this weekend’s match are Deon Fourie, Tiaan Liebenberg or even Habana himself.
