Pollard Super Rugby debut on hold

The Bulls have suffered a minor flyhalf setback with news that Louis Fouche is out of action for the remainder of the season. While is not as bad for Super Rugby, the Currie Cup sees the Pretoria based outfit with no experienced flyhalf.

While there are calls for Handre Pollard to be included in this weekend’s Bulls Super Rugby squad to take on the Sharks, reports indicate that the young flyhalf will not be involved.

Pollard has not formed part a Super Rugby squad all season, instead playing Vodacom Cup, Varsity Cup and recently being involved in the Junior World Championship. Previously, the Bulls have opted to use Jurgen Visser as the flyhalf backup in the match 22 and playing Morne Steyn for the entire match. This is set to continue.

Considering that Pollard has played a mammoth 24 games already this season, it is a wise move for a player in his first full year as a professional. Pollard’s rise and reputation is on a similar level to what we saw happen to Johan Goosen, and we all know what happened to him when he started playing week in and week out.

Come Currie Cup though, the Bulls look likely to have no other choice but play Pollard, unless they back another flyhalf in the interim. Their options are limited to Tony Jantjies, brother of Lions/Stormers flyhalf Elton Jantjies, and Sharks fullback cum flyhalf Willie du Plessis, who has performed admirably with Pollard at Tuks.
