Contrasting midfield fortunes for Bulls, Stormers

The Bulls and Stormers face off in Cape Town this weekend in a thrilling climax to local conference play in this year’s Super Rugby competition. While the visitors can boast a relatively unscathed squad after Saturday’s bruising game against the Sharks, there is one rather significant casualty to report.

New Bok Jan Serfontein suffered a knee injury that will keep him out of action for between two and three weeks, meaning a return in time for the Bulls’ semi-final encounter against opposition yet to be determined; while hardly a train smash given the length of the lay-off, it does leave the team a little thin at inside centre ahead of the weekend’s game, which the Bulls must win to ensure a top table finish. Forgotten man Francois Venter looks likely to start in the number 12 jersey, given Wynand Olivier’s departure for France.

The news for the Stormers is better, with their regular 12 (and skipper) Jean de Villiers passed fit to play in this match after missing out on the weekend trip to Port Elizabeth.
