Hougaard side-lined for the rest of the season

Brenden Nel, writing for SuperSport’s website, has confirmed that Francois Hougaard will undergo surgery on his ankle next week, which will likely see him side-lined for the rest of the season. The ankle has plagued Hougaard in a season that he would prefer to forget.

The versatile scrumhalf who is often utilised on the wing at both international and Super rugby level picked up the ankle injury during the early part of the Bulls Super Rugby season and it saw him return home early from the Bulls overseas tour.

“It isn’t the same ankle injury that has been plaguing him,” team doctor Org Strauss explained. “This is a different injury he picked up and we believe it the right course of action that he undergoes surgery.”

This will surely give Heyneke Meyer a headache before the Springbok team announcement for the Castle Rugby Championship at the end of the week.

While he was called up to the Boks for the June internationals, he was sent back from the Bok camp early to recover from the ankle injury and he lost his place to his teammate Jano Vermaak.

Hougaard’s injury means that Jano Vermaak is likely to join Ruan Pienaar as Bok No 9 for the Castle Rugby championship, with Piet van Zyl doing back-up duty as he did in the June.

Other players who will be absent for the Castle Rugby championship due to injury are Sharks Frans Steyn and Pieter-Steph du Toit, Bulls Pierre Spies and Arno Botha and Stormers prop Frans Malherbe. JP Pietersen and Andries Bekker are also not available due to commitments at their Japanese clubs.
