Currie Cup injury update: Daniller in doubt

Injury news is starting to filter on from the various Currie Cup premier league teams and while the weekend’s toll is nowhere near as bad as we’ve become used to from Super Rugby, a number of players look likely to miss out.

Fantasy League managers, of course, would do well to take note of these on a weekly basis, but if you’re playing over on justrugby.net, be sure not to hit the “trade” button just yet as you only have 10 for the season and need to use them very wisely indeed.

Cheetahs fullback Hennie Daniller has apparently been playing for some weeks with a broken hand; never really known for his management of injured players (ask Juan Smith), coaching genius Naka Drotske has apparently been happy to let the big man play through the pain, rather than getting it seen to. Saturday’s match against the Lions appeared to have been the last straw for Daniller and he’s undergoing scans today to determine the best course of action. If he is forced out, the Cheetahs will be stretched at fullback; Riaan Smit is the likely deputy in the number 15 jersey, but he too is struggling with injury and a call will be made later. Willie du Plessis is now set to join the Cheetahs after it was earlier reported that he’d become a Lions player.

Griquas have definitely lost both Ligtoring Landman (broken thumb) and Marnus Schoeman (hamstring tear) for this weeekend’s game; the former is of course likely to be out for much of the season and the latter just a few weeks.

The Sharks have only Tim Whitehead and Keegan Daniel as fresh doubts for the week, with neither yet ruled either in or out. Hansie Graaff and SP Marais have both started training with the squad this week as well.

In Bulls country, flanks Jacques du Plessis and Wiaan Liebenberg are both in some doubt for the weekend, but neither has yet been ruled out. Handre Pollard comes back into their squad too, along with Kings players in Jacques Engelbrecht, Bandise Maku and David Bullbring. It’s unlikely, though, that coach Pine Pienaar will tinker too much with the team.

Western Province winger Cheslin Kolbe is in doubt with a knee injury, while Rynardt Elstadt and Gary van Aswegen are also being monitored. Tiaan Liebenberg should come back into the selection frame after recovering from injury.

We’re not aware of any fresh Lions injuries, but apparently Alwyn Hollenbach is going under the knife this morning to fix his foot, thus delaying his return to action until next season.
