Under 19s continue the charge

The somewhat unfancied Sharks under 19 side, with few big names compared to some of their rivals, continue to defy the odds and recorded a 25-19 win over Western Province at a soaked Villagers on Saturday; their 4th away win of the campaign.

Details are sketchy, but with both sides scoring three tries in atrocious conditions, it was left to the Sharks under 19 kickers to seal the result. With the likes of Jean-Luc du Plessis again in good form with the boot, they were good value for a 6-point win.

The Sharks took a 3-0 lead into the break, with du Plessis making the most of his sole opportunity in the half, while Province missed a pair of penalty shots at goal. The sides traded unconverted tries shortly after the break; the Sharks’ going the way of winger Mike Cloete and with the game evenly poised at 8-3 in favour of the visitors, something of a blitzkrieg followed. First it was that man Neil Maritz, with his third of the campaign, with scrummie Cameron Wright scoring not long afterwards. Du Plessis converted both and the Sharks were cruising at 22-3 up, before the inevitable Province fightback got under way.

Fortunately, the Sharks managed to hold on, even though their only further points came via a Sandile Khubeka drop goal, against two further tries to the hosts.

In winning this match, the Sharks under 19 side consolidated their third place on the table, moving within a point of the second-placed Lions, the only side to beat them to date.

Scores: WP under 19 (19): Tries Jonathan Bredell, Josh Moon, Raymone Samuels. Conversions Christopher Smith (2).
Sharks under 19 (25): Tries Michael Cloete, Neil Maritz, Cameron Wright. Conversions Jean-Luc du Plessis (2). Penalty du Plessis. Drop-goal Sandile Khubeka.
