Ungerer seals the deal

After trying so hard to sign him as a schoolboy, the Blue Bulls under 21 side were forced to look on in horror on Friday afternoon as Sharks and Junior Springbok scrumhalf Stefan Ungerer broke, dummied and scored off the back of a maul to confine them to a 19-15 defeat at Kings Park that had looked out of the question at half time.

Ungerer’s score, which overturned a strong Bulls scoreline advantage from the first half, came as the result of a dominant team performance in the second half, with the Sharks forwards in particular coming to the fore strongly. Earlier in the half, flying winger Kotaro Matsushima had rounded off a stunning team movement to bring the hosts closer.

The first half, though, was pretty much all Bulls, with two tries of their own standing against just two penalties from Rob du Preez. With the Sharks looking dead and buried with 40 to play, huge credit must go to the boys for standing up and recording a rare and special win over the old enemy; for many of these players, their first ever win against the Blue Bulls in junior rugby.

Scores: Sharks under 21 (19). Tries Kotaro Matsushima, Stefan Ungerer. Penalties Rob du Preez (3).
Blue Bulls under 21 (15). Tries Dries Swanepoel, Jermaine Kleinsmith. Conversion Handre Pollard. Penalty Pollard.
