Changes we shall see

Yesterday we looked at potential changes to the Springbok team to face the Wallabies this weekend, and it seems we are in for a few changes, whether we like it or not.

According to reports this morning, Heyneke Meyer has expressed his need to freshen up the team after extensive travel (what were certain players doing in France then this weekend Heyneke??), with likely changes at fullback and in the front and second row.

All reports seem to indicate Zane Kirchner as likely starter in the fullback jersey, even though he hasn’t played much rugby in the last few months. This change will move the electrifying Willie le Roux to the wing and drop Bjorn Basson to the bench, or even out of the match 22 together. Furthermore, we are likely to see Flip van der Merwe in the second row and Bismarck du Plessis get a start.

I agree with Bismarck starting, and Flip van der Merwe on a good day is better than Jaundre Kruger, but he will have to make sure he stays on the field, and not give away silly penalties or cost his team by getting one or the other card. As for the Kirchner move, I refuse to comment on a silly move like that, even if we do get to see Basson off the field as a result, I’d rather the back three remain unchanged than have Mr Kirchner in a Green and Gold jersey.

There is no talk of any changes to the loose trio, so expect Francois Louw, Willem Alberts and Duane Vermeulen to start while Ruan Pienaar and Morne Steyn run the backline. The midfield combination of Jean de Villiers and JJ Engelbrecht, a centre combination which seems to truly work for a change, also looks likely to remain unchanged.

Your thoughts? Do you agree with these changes?
