White rumours gather pace

Stick a wet finger in the air this morning. The chances are, the wind is blowing Jake White towards a job with the Sharks.

No – that’s not official. As ever, we refer to John Smit’s statement on the matter last week, stating merely that the Sharks would be open to exploring the Jake option, should such a discussion float the former Bok coach’s boat too. There’s no inside info, or anything, to go on here – although other sources claim to have just that. This is based simply on what I’ve picked up and the fact that this much smoke is generally a pretty good indication of a fire somewhere.

Questions were raised, at the start of Brendan Venter’s tenure, about how exactly he would manage a workload that included the Sharks Director of Rugby job in addition to his flourishing Cape Town medical practice and an ongoing consultancy to Saracens in the UK. Smit, in a candid interview with Tank Lanning some weeks back, confirmed that he knew Vetner would never be able to sustain that sort of commitment on a long term basis and while we’ll never know the exact specifics of the agreement between the two men, it’s starting to look more and more as though Venter was brought in to steady the ship in the short term, rather than to necessarily steer her course indefinitely – at least, not in any sort of detailed, hands-on way.

White’s sudden (and auspicious, if also somewhat suspicious) availability might be just the catalyst to accelerate Venter’s inevitable plans to fade into the background when it comes to the Sharks. While I’m a long way from ready to join the chorus proclaiming that this move is a “done deal”, I do see how a move to instate White as the man in charge in time for Super Rugby next year could fit in with both his and Venter’s agendas, while hopefully leaving the Sharks in no worse a position.

It’s not often than a coaching replacement after just 6 months can be described as “win-win”, but that just might end up being the case here.

If it happens…
