Two big blows for Lions

The Lions suffered two serious backline injuries during Friday night’s home loss to the Sharks, according to a report in Beeld this morning.

Few will be surprised to hear the centre Dylan des Fountain’s season is over, after the injury prone former Western Province player was carted off the field clutching his knee. The good news is that des Fountain has already had successful surgery to repair a meniscus tear and shouldn’t be out of action for an inordinate amount of time; his 2013 season, though, is definitely over, leaving the Lions scratching their heads for cover at inside cente, after already losing Alwyn Hollenbach.

Equally concerning to the coaching staff is the news that Elton Jantjies appears to have sustained a season-ending ankle injury. The out-of-favour Bok pivot was well on his way to turning in a match winning performance for his side when forced from the field and while the Lions will now turn to Marnitz Boshoff as an able replacement at flyhalf, they will need to replace the latter at fullback, a position in which he has come strongly to the fore in recent weeks.

The Lions face Western Province at Newlands this weekend and will additionally need to overcome the hurdle caused by Franco van der Merwe’s Bok call-up.
