Alexander blow for under 21s

With regular 5-lock Stephan Lewies doing sterling duty for the senior side, the last thing that Sharks under 21 coach Etienne Fynn could really afford is to lose more “tall timber” ahead of Friday’s crunch clash at Loftus. An injury to regular number 8 Guy Alexander, though, has prompted a reshuffle that sees yet another change in the number 5 jersey this week.

Johan Meyer – who’s enjoying an impressive debut season at this level – shifts to the back of the scrum to occupy the position most familiar to him as a schoolboy at Queens College. Wade Elliot, who stood in for Lewies at lock last week against the Leopards, will play blindside flank in Meyer’s stead, with David Fisher elevated to the starting line-up as line-out kingpin this week. Fisher will be no stranger to Loftus, having matriculated a few hundred metres away at Pretoria Boys High School.

Speaking of Boys High, though, a further change sees Simon Kerrod – also an old boy – fall out this week, with Maks van Dyk returning at tight head to complete an all-Junior Bok front row with Allan Dell and captain Franco Marais. Van Dyk missed out on last week’s game as he was a traveling reserve for the senior side, who find themselves a little thin at tight head given Rayno Gerber’s ongoing injury troubles.

The backs are unchanged this week, as Gareth Meikle continues at 13 in place of the injured Tyler Fisher.

Sharks under 21: 15 Sean Robinson, 14 Kotaro Matsushima, 13 Gareth Meikle, 12 Andre Esterhuizen, 11 Alcino Isaacs, 10 Robert du Preez, 9 Stefan Ungerer, 8 Johan Meyer, 7 Wade Elliot, 6 Khaya Majola, 5 David Fisher, 4 Wiehan Hay, 3 Maks van Dyk, 2 Franco Marais (capt), 1 Allan Dell
Subs: 16 Greg Bauer, 17 Marne Coetzee, 18 Murray Bondesio, 19 Dylan Nel, 20 Hanco Venter, 21 Duncan Campbell, 22 Michael Bernardt
