The Springboks at Ellis Park

The All Blacks have Eden Park, but the Springboks have Ellis Park. A few weeks ago the All Blacks kept their 76 year record at Eden Park when they beat the Springboks 29 – 15. Two weeks later and we have everything riding on tomorrow’s game, The Rugby Championship Trophy.

New Zealand are currently 1st on the log with 23 points and South Africa 2nd on 18. To finish on top the Springboks must win by 8 or more points and score 4 tries or more, but also prevent New Zealand from getting a bonus point by losing within 7 points or scoring four tries of their own. Apart form the last time they played at Ellis Park in 2004 when the score was 40 – 26 in favour of South Africa, these games have generally been close with less them 8 points separating the two teams.

The most memorable test at Ellis Park must be the 1995 World Cup final, when South Africa beat New Zealand, 15 – 12. Games against New Zealand at this venue date back to as early as 1960, when the Springboks won the first test played at this venue 13 – 0.

In 8 tests played at Ellis Park the All Blacks have only won two, one in 1992 which ended 24 – 27 and 1997, 32 – 35. The two games after 1997 the Boks won 46 – 40 in 2000 and 40 – 26 in 2004. The scores are generally high and four tries will definitely be a possibly, but also not impossible for the All Blacks as they have already scored four tries during three games with the Boks only getting the four try bonus point in two games.

The Springboks and New Zealand have played 44 tests in South Africa with New Zealand winning 18, South Africa 25 and 1 ending in a draw. The last test the Boks won against New Zealand in South Africa was at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth in 2011, 18 – 5.
