Lions sponsor-less for 2014?

The Golden Lions appear to be scratching their heads for a title sponsor ahead of their much-vaunted return to Super Rugby next year.

MTN announced late last week that they would not be renewing their sponsorship of the union, after a three-year deal that injected enough cash into the beleaguered team to keep them afloat during their darkest days came to an end this month.

While it’s not, in itself, a train smash that the MTN deal had failed to rematerialise (after all, sponsors do come and go in this game) what is particularly concerning is that the Lions have not named a replacement and based on the general tone of the releases coming from Joburg, didn’t seem to know that MTN weren’t planning on renewing. I’m certainly not getting the feeling that an equivalent replacement sponsorship deal is anywhere close to being announced, raising the very real possibility of the team playing with no logo on the front of the jersey – at least for the initial part of 2014.

MTN has given the typical “consolidation of sponsorship portfolio and opted not to continue with a rugby team” explanation for their decision not to renew.
