Strauss joins Edinburgh too

Hot on the heels of the news about Carl Bezuidenhout, another South African is on his way to play for Alan Solomons – and this one a Springbok too.

Stalwart centre Andries Strauss, who stood in as captain for the Kings last year, has agreed to join former coach Solomons in Edinburgh on an 18 month contract.

Strauss joined the Sharks after coming through the ranks in Bloemfontein, playing for Grey College and the Cheetahs age group teams. He made his Super 14 debut in 2006 under Dick Muir but otherwise endured a rather frustrating five years in Durban, before coming of age in the 2010 Currie Cup, where his defensive exploits were key to the Sharks’ run to the trophy.

He returned to the Cheetahs in 2011, before becoming a marquee signing for the Kings ahead of their maiden Super Rugby campaign.

Strauss’s younger brother, Richardt, plays for Leinster and was recently capped for Ireland.
