SP’s recovery well on track

Good news for the Sharks today is that Currie Cup fullback SP Marais seems to be making faster-than-expected progress after off-season shoulder surgery.

When the injury was first reported late last year, the prognosis was for a three-month layoff, meaning Marais would miss out on the start of the season. As we said at the time, that would have left the Sharks rather exposed at fullback, given the departure of a number of other players with Super Rugby experience in that position.

A tweet from the player yesterday, though, raises hope that he might be back a little earlier than expected and could even, at a pinch, be fit for selection for the February 15 season opener against the Bulls. “Great News!! 3 more weeks then I can finally play again! ” says Marais, making it likely that he should be cleared for a return to the field a week before the season kicks off.

According to Jake White yesterday, the only other squad members currently not fit for selection are lock Anton Bresler and veteran flank Jacques Botes.
